BASIC VLSI - Concepts
- INTRODUCTION:
- Voltage is the difference in electric potential between two nodes. In other words, we can say that energy per unit charge.
- Current is the rate of flow of electric charge.
Electronic circuits and systems are of two types
- Analog
- Digital
- Analog circuits are those in which voltages and currents vary continuously through the given range.
- Digital circuits are those in which the voltage levels can assume only a finite number of distinct values. Digital Electronics is the study of electronic circuits that are used to process and control digital signals.
- BASIC TERMINOLOGIES IN A WAVE:
- A wave pulse has two edges:
- A Leading edge
- A Trailing edge
- In a pulse first edge is defined as leading edge and the second edge is called as trailing edge.
- The amplitude of a pulse is the height of the pulse, usually expressed in volts.
- Rise time is the time taken by the pulse to raise from 10% to 90% of its amplitude.
- Fall time is the time taken by the pulse to fall from 90% to 10% of its amplitude.
- Duration of a Pulse is Pulse width (tw )e., the time interval between 50% points on the leading and trailing edges.
- The Time Period(T) s, is the length of time from leading edge of one pulse till leading edge of next pulse (or) from trailing edge of one pulse till trailing edge of next pulse. It is also called one cycle.
- The reciprocal of Time Period is called Frequency(F=1/T) Hz,e., number of cycles per second.
- The Duty cycle is defined as ratio of pulse width to the time period of the cycle(tw/T)
- Mostly waveforms in Digital systems are composed of a series of pulses and can be classified as Periodic or Non-Periodic waveforms.
- A Periodic waveform is one which repeats itself at regular intervals of time called the period, T.
- A Non-Periodic waveform, does not repeat at regular intervals and maybe composed of pulses of different widths.
- FUNCTIONS OF DIGITAL LOGIC:
Many operations can be performed by a digital logic. Common operations include
- Arithmetic Operations
- Encoding
- Decoding
- Multiplexing
- Demultiplexing
- Comparison
- Storage
- Counting
- Data transmission
